Washington Dulles Airport USO International Lounge volunteers had the honor of rolling out the red, white and blue carpet for more than 20 World War II veterans traveling to Normandy, France for the 75th anniversary of D-Day events. Beginning on Friday, May 31, USO-Metro volunteers greeted World War II veterans with American flags, red poppies and a chorus of patriotic cheers and cheers from nearby passengers.

"The joy and wonder on the faces of World War II veterans when they see our USO volunteers show that these small acts of appreciation mean a lot to them," said Andrea Tassan, Dulles Airport USO Lounge Supervisor. "It is an incredible honor for our volunteers, who truly represent the support of the American people, to have the opportunity to personally thank them for their heroic service to our nation."

On Monday, June 3, three World War II veterans, Clifford Stump, 94, Gordon D. Munson, 91, and Harry Miller, 91, had lunch and shared war stories with several Northern Virginia high school students. The luncheon was hosted by United Airlines and the 82nd Airborne Association. USO-Metro provided volunteers to help set up and serve lunch after greeting veterans at their gate.

In recognition, World War II veterans presented USO Dulles Airport Lounge volunteers with a challenge coin commemorating the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Titled "Leap into History 2019," the coin depicts images from Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge. This unique coin joins more than 100 military challenge coins on display in the USO Dulles Airport Lounge.

Helping military travelers is a large part of the services USO airport volunteers provide to help strengthen America's military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country. Services include arrival and departure greetings, expedited movement through security checkpoints and connecting gates, and support for victims' families.

The Dulles USO Airport Lounge, located in front of baggage scanners #11 and #12, is sponsored by Northrop Grumman and CenturyLink and is supported by more than 200 volunteers who give their time to the nation's traveling military members and their families. . It is worth a visit, very comfortable salon with a first class volunteer. There are plenty of pre-flight snacks and comfy couches to lounge on.

The USO Lounge at Washington Dulles International Airport is open daily and serves as a home away from home for our troops and their families as they travel around the world to defend our country. Support services include something as simple as a cup of coffee and a quiet place to rest, finding accommodation in an emergency, retrieving important travel orders that have been lost or making a last phone call before deployment.

The hall also serves as one of the primary transfer points for our Victims' Family Services program, providing comfort and reassurance to bereaved families traveling to see their loved ones return or attend a memorial service. Dedicated USO volunteers help these family members travel, attend to their immediate needs on the spot, and often just understand.

Wait, First Class Doesn't Always Grant You Lounge Access?

As most of us are former military volunteers, we understand these situations and know what these people are going through. It makes me happy when I can help anyone from this husband to any young family experiencing a constant change of station. These are the situations I have encountered and are the absolute reason I continue to volunteer with the USO
